failed last month. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec with what we're expected to hear from caltrans a little later this morning. >> reporter: there was a lot of criticism from board members that they have not yet come up with a plan to fix the problem. there are still faulty rods in the new span of the bay bridge here behind me. and now a new expert is saying that caltrans really fell on its face in this situation. unless caltrans identifies and replaces the bolts, he says they can expect more breakage in the coming years saying caltrans has been inadequate in its specifications that either inattention or ignorance led to the problem. 288 steel rods, many faulty, were installed into the east pier of the bay bridge and 32

of them snapped in early march. transportation authorities are taking this report seriously. metropolitan transportation commission chair amy worth tells the bay area news group, it is possible to have the bolts lay dormant and fail later in an earthquake. she says these issues are why we need a comprehensive solution. that's what we are hoping to hear more about today. the expert, chung, says that they should have used a different grade of steel. he is also recommending that they test the surface hard nest of all the bolts and replace all suspect rods where possible. she is also recommending new testing procedure and transportation officials are planning on meeting with him on monday morning. but they are going to talk more about the problem, what happened, how we got here and the fix later on this morning. we'll have the live later on kpix 5. >> the new span of the bridge is still on schedule though to open labor day weekend. >> new this morning, a downtown

oakland bart station evacuated as officers search for shooting suspects. the deadly shooting happened last night around 10:20 at 13th street and broadway. bart police closed the 12th street station to look for the shooters. the station was reopened though within an hour. the suspects remain on the run. investigators are not releasing any more details about that the shooting. a fire at a homeless shelter in san jose has 40 residents displaced mostly women and children. the fire on south 11th street started at 5:30 yesterday evening. when tire crews arrived, they saw smoke -- fire crews arrived they saw smoke and flames from a deck on the third floor of the building. all the residents were able to evacuate. the red cross is helping the residents find alternative shelter. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. we love this kind of weather. i'm not sure lawrence does because he doesn't have to work on these kind of days. >> are you kidding me?! one of the most difficult things to forecast is the fog. i have been doing it for years.

but just trying to track and see how far that's going to go onshore makes a huge difference in the weather. i'm very busy, guys. >> all right! we believe you! [ laughter ] >> okay. we have some patchy fog out there right now. it has moved inside the bay in some of the valleys. we'll see a lot of sunshine as we head in toward the afternoon and nice weather. it should be pretty good but temperatures are going to cool off outside as the onshore breeze kicks in dropping the temperatures. you're looking at patchy fog out over the bay right now. kind of broken right now with the bay bridge. temperatures running in the 40s and also the 50s in most spots. it looks like towards the afternoon hours, numbers still warming up nice. 74 milpitas. 75 in east bay. mid- to upper 70s today so we are done with the 80s right now. and then as you head toward the coastline we'll be much cooler, 50s and low 60s at the beaches. still 71 degrees in hayward. we'll have more on your difficult forecast coming up. but right now we want to check out the roads with elizabeth.

>> yeah. we have an easy morning commute shaping up. yeah, no big hot spots. toward the bay bridge they still haven't turned on the metering lights which will change any minute but you can see from the middle lanes the fact that they haven't filled up yet the metering lights haven't been turned on. so the outer cash lanes are getting busy as you can see. san mateo bridge no delays on the high-rise either direction. traffic is lighter than we saw about 15 minutes ago on westbound. an accident in livermore is cleared up. delays on the altamont pass. 30 minutes is the drive time to take you towards the dublin interchange. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. new this morning, the death toll from a building collapse in bangladesh continues to

rise. an eight-story structure near the county's capital fell this morning more than 80 people are feared dead. hundreds more are injured. dozens more missing. homes, shops and a factory are in the building. workers complained about the decaying building leading up to the disaster. >> boston is on the road to recovery now finally. >> the area near the boston marathon finish line reopened to the public just a few hours ago. cbs reporter edward lawrence is in boston this morning where investigators have details about what may have led to the violence. >> reporter: good morning. investigators giving a lot more details. interrogators have gone back into the hospital room to the teenaged bombing suspect. he is reportedly telling them the how and the why these attacks happened as people here in boston started to heal: the barricades came down early this morning on boylston street the site of last week's deadly marathon bombings. prior to opening the area, police escorted bombing victims to the scene for a private ceremony tuesday night.

>> when you're face to face with the people directly affected and you see the bandages, you just feel what they feel. >> reporter: these new photos appear to show the suspect 26- year-old tamerlan tsarnaev and his 19-year-old brother johar in a shootout with people friday. tamerlan was killed. johar was captured later hiding in a boated. -- know boat. dzhokhar tsarnaev was taken here to beth israel medical center with gunshot wounds. he was upgraded to fair condition tuesday allowing interrogators to ask him more questions about the events leading up to the bombings. cbs news has learned tsarnaev told investigators he and his brother were motivated through online jihadist websites. officials believe they may have read an internet publication with stories such as how to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom. >> a problem now is since 9/11, transnational recruiting through the internet for sympathizers that are in our

country. >> reporter: the investigation led officials to this store in new hampshire. tamerlan bought fireworks here six weeks before the marathon. >> he definitely stressed that he wanted the biggest loudest stuff. >> reporter: officials believe the tsarnaevs may have used the black powder from the fireworks to build the bombs. and vice president joe biden will be here in boston in about three hours for a public memorial service. that service is for the officer and the -- the m.i.t. officer who was murdered on friday. now, investigators believe that that crime actually helped lead them to arresting or this one bombing suspect and killing the other. reporting live in boston, edward lawrence. now back to you, michelle, frank. >> edward, are they done with the crime scene? have they done all their work there? >> reporter: yeah. investigators have released the crime scene. the first public transit bus went down that street this morning about 3 a.m. east coast time. the public transit station or trolley or t station is going to open a little later on this

morning. so life is returning back to normal in the area. but the emotional scars will take much longer. >> it will take a long time, i would imagine. edward lawrence live in boston, thanks. and we are also hearing from the man who helped end the manhunt. david henneberry owns the boat where 19-year-old johar tsarnaev was found hiding. he described the moment he realized america's most wanted man was right in his backyard. >> i look in the boat over here, i look on the floor, and i see blood, a good amount of blood and my eyes went to the other side of the engine box. there was a body. >> what were you thinking at that time? >> oh, my god. >> no kidding. henneberry says he was just glad he was able to help and feels lucky to be alive. a bogus tweet about a terror attack on the white house sent stocks into a big tailspin yesterday. a hacker group claiming responsibility for the fake alert that caused the dow to go

down 150 almost instantly. the tweet was distributed through the "associated press" twitter page. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us in san francisco to explain how one single tweet could cause such a panic so quickly on wall street. >> reporter: good morning. we're live at twitter headquarters in san francisco. the company now is trying to beef up security after this entire incident exposed a major weakness with the social media website. now, twitter is taking a facebook and google employing the same two-step authentication process. this requires users logging in from a different location to give a password and piece of information already registered to a device. now, this fake tweet was the latest in a series of high- profile attacks. analysts say this one in particular took hacking to a new level. >> it it does start to get a lot scarier when the goal is to spread misinformation. you have to wonder if the hackers today profited from this stock market drop after

the false tweet. >> reporter: this comes less than a month after social media websites got the sec's bless to be a source for market moving news. as for twitter's comments on the situation, they declined to talk. they say they don't comment on individual accounts for privacy reasons. but we do know the ap says they will be working with twitter to see what happened. cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> the syrian liberation army is claiming responsibility for the hack yesterday. the fbi is now investigating the incident. time now is 6:10. a woman goes to the grocery store and ends up fighting for her life. how she was nearly killed chasing a purse snatcher. >> and a new twist in the case of those poisonous letters that were sent to the white house. why police now think they arrested the wrong guy. >> and if the calorie count labels are not enough, there's a new way to make you think twice before ordering that double-double. ,,

dance class, shopping, and more. so do something nice for it. chevron with techron. care for your car. an ohio woman. a purse snatcher ended up dragging r in a car as sh a trip to the grocery store turned into an all-out battle for an ohio woman. a purse snatcher dragged her in a car as she hung on to her purse. surveillance video from the parking lot caught it all on tape. and witnesses luckily were able to help the woman. >> oh, my god. >> she was dragged by that car. hopefully she will be okay. >> sometimes you have to just let go. you know? let it go. it's not that important. >> liz, are you getting busy in traffic? the metering lights are on and we have a good sized delay on th bay bridge. probably 10 minutes to get on the bay bridge.

and this is what it looks like once you get past all that. all the metering lights all that delay, this is at the "s" curve. as you can see, then things are moving a lot better on the upper deck getting into san francisco. so it's just from the overcrossing to the metering lights so you will have to wait for a bit. san mateo bridge westbound 92 approaching the high-rise looks good. that drive time is still 15 minutes or so out of hayward heading towards foster city. and if you are coming the other direction, eastbound 92 still looks good towards the east bay. so here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. yeah, nice and quiet here, as well. these headlights that is southbound 101 heading into san francisco. let's check the map and drive times. this is definitely one of the busier spots this morning. we had an early-morning accident in livermore took a while to clear. we are left with a stall approaching north livermore avenue so good sized delays coming up over the altamont pass and through the livermore valley but then once you get past vasco road or so, then we

see improvement at the dublin interchange. equal go flying over highway 4 westbound through antioch busy this morning until you get to pittsburg and bay point. let's go to lawrence with the forecast. we have some changes today cool air filtering on show low clouds and fog rolling back in and that means we are going to see a cooler day outside. this will be nice but it will take a while for the fog to break up. we are seeing some of the fog along the coastline and patchy fog inside the bay also into some of the north bay valleys right now. it looks like a cooler start to the day with patchy fog outside. then by the afternoon again becoming mostly sunny with mild temperatures, the coastal fog continuing to keep those temperatures down a bit. and then more fog as we head in toward tonight and slow cooling into tomorrow, as well. out over the bay the fog is broken at this time. the temperatures generally in the 40s and 50s around the bay area. 49 degrees in san francisco. 49 in san jose. and 45 in santa rosa with fog.

holding on to bring nice weather ain most spots away from the coastline. 88 in sacramento today, 89 fresno, 75 yosemite and 61 and partly cloudy skies in monterey bay. that patchy fog will linger along the coastline and push back onshore tomorrow thicker. tomorrow the bottom of the temperatures. 76 in san jose. 77 and sunny this afternoon in morgan hill. 50s at the coastline with patchy fog. we'll see about 78 degrees in brentwood. 76 in fairfield. and 74 degrees in vallejo. inside the bay we'll see 60 degrees in daly city. next couple of days cooling off. high pressure builds in for friday and weekend, looking nice. toward next week we could see a return to offshore winds by tuesday and that could bring

those temperatures back up into the 80s. >> i love the 80s. >> between now and then not bad. >> the 70s we'll take it. >> not bad at all. typical this time of year. >> we don't have a choice. >> no, we don't. >> let's enjoy. >> thank you. 6:18. one suspect cleared another under investigation for those ricin tainted letters that were sent to washington. paul kevin curtis was arrested last week. he was charged with sending poison letters to the president and two other elected officials. >> when you have been charged with something you never heard of ricin or whatever. i thought they said rice. i don't even eat rice. >> now the fbi is focused on another mississippi man. they say the new suspect has a grudge against curtis and may try to frame him. a california lawmaker has drafted a homeless bill of rights. assemblyman tom ammiano says

the bill is in response to homeless sit-lie laws. the bill calls for new 24-hour- a-day hygiene centers and other laws. we are used to seeing calorie information on restaurant menus but one of those menus also listed how many minutes you have to exercise to burn off those calories. they would likely choose lower calorie options. the study comes from texas christian university. eat a whopper, two hours on the treadmill. >> i would still order the whopper. failing. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. and i just got off the phone with the caltrans spokesman. the man in charge of the bay bridge project says we can't expect any bombshells from today's meeting. they are just narrowing down exactly what happened here, how we got in this situation and narrowing down the options for what they are going to do now. they have discussed four options as far as a fix for this issue and he said that they have now narrowed that down to two. they better do something sooner rather than later according to experts because more of these bad bolts could fail during an earthquake. we are hearing new criticism this morning after a report in the "contra costa times." an expert saying that unless caltrans identifies and replaces these bolts, it can expect more breakage in the coming years. metallurgist yun chung is quoted as slamming caltrans saying it's inadequate specifications and inattention

or ignorance led to the problem. 288 rods were installed and 32 of them snapped in early march. chung tells the bay area news group, quote, it's very apparent that no one was paying attention to the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement when the rods were in service. he says from what i see in the documents, dyson the manufacturer gave caltrans what it asked for. caltrans fell on its face." very tough words there from that metal expert. he is recommending that caltrans chooses a different grade of steel if they replace those bolts and also recommending that they test the surface hardness of all of the bolts and replace all suspect rods where possible. he is also recommending some new testing procedures. this morning's meeting is in oakland at 9:30. we'll have the latest on at noon. live on treasure island, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> anne, before you go, how seriously is caltrans taking the expert's advice? >> reporter: they are meeting with mr. chung on monday morning. so they are taking his report

very seriously. 32-page report. they also say they are balancing his advice with the advice of their own experts. it's turning out to be a slow process. >> it sounds like it. all right, anne makovec live on treasure island, thank you. 6:32. new this morning, police in oakland are looking for suspects in two deadly shootings. the first happened yesterday afternoon in east oakland. the "oakland tribune" reports a woman was shot while driving along foothill boulevard. last night a fatal shooting downtown forced the 12th street bart station to shut down. the station opened an hour later. the suspect respects are on the run. a fire at a homeless shelter in san jose has 40 residents displaced most women and children. the fire started around 5:30 yesterday evening. when fire crews arrived at the scene shooting from a third

floor deck. all of the residents were able to evacuate. the red cross is helping the residents find alternative shelter. the cause is under investigation. a little bit of fog out there which is making for a cool morning which is nice actually. >> just a bit but it's still nice out there. >> yeah. i like it. by the afternoon it will melt to the coastline. we'll talk about sunshine and nice weather but starting out with clouds this morning into the bay and some of the north bay valleys. more of a sea breeze kicking in helping to cool down of the temperatures all around the bay area toward the afternoon. patchy fog lingering over the bay right now. it is broken though somewhat so really not a deep marine layer that's moving onshore but enough to help cool down the temperatures. numbers in the 40s. i think as we head toward the afternoon, only 50s toward the beaches with patchy fog continuing there. we'll see 60s and 70s inside the bay and mid- to upper 70s inland. we'll talk about that coming

up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. we are going to woodside this morning. southbound 102 before woodside road a woman hit a deer so possibly blocking lanes right there. again in the southbound direction just very minor backups behind it. of course it is still early and usually 102 doesn't see huge delays at this time of the morning. where we are seeing delays westbound 580 that altamont pass ride into livermore, we had a stall and accident this morning in livermore. that's what's causing these early-morning backups. drive time is definitely in the red. 35 minutes between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. the busiest spots are in livermore once you get closer towards the dublin interchange. then things improve. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. 6:34 now. there may be a new lead for one of the bay area's most wanted men. investigators think 42-year-old dimitri storm picked up a woman who was hitch-hiking in san mateo county on monday. now, the woman noticed a driver had a knife so she got out at a rest stop in palo alto. she called police and when officers arrived there, they found the car which had been stolen but no sight of storm.

he is accused of a string of break-ins and car thefts stretching from sonoma down to santa cruz. american investigators are in southern russia today talking with the parents of the boston bombing suspects. meanwhile in boston, barricades were removed this morning and traffic is flowing on boylston street. before the street was open to the public, police escorted bombing victims to the area for a private memorial service. >> when you're face to face with the people that were directly affected, you see the bandages and, you know, you just feel what they feel. >> newly obtained photos appear to show the bombing suspects in a shootout with police last friday. also, investigators have learned one of the suspects bought fireworks at a store in new hampshire six weeks before the marathon and "possibly" used black powder from them in the bombs. the u.s. team interviewing the suspects' parents in russia are likely hearing the same thing the mother told a british

news station. she insists there is no way her sons were involved in the bombings. the woman claims her sons were set up. >> what happened is a terrible thing. but i know that my kids have nothing to do with this. i know it. i'm mother. i have -- i -- you know, i know my kids. i know my kids. my kids would never get involved into anything like that. >> russia flagged the elder tsarnaev as a possible islamist radical in 2011. the fbi questioned him at moscow's request but found nothing out of the ordinary. $21 million has already been raised for the one fund for the boston marathon bombing victims. the bay to breakers race organizers will donate $5 for the fund for everyone person who registers through noon tomorrow. more than 30,000 runners will

learned how vulnerable they are. this fake tweet was the latest in a series of high-profile twitter attacks. our own cbs "60 minutes" was a recent victim of the same crime. the question this morning is, what is twitter doing? the microblogging site announced plans to introduce a two-factor authentication option. it's the same security that facebook and google use. analysts are saying it's about time. >> it's too easy to hackneying but it's definitely too easy to hack twitter. they are still relying on very simple passwords. >> reporter: the two-step process requires users logging in from a new location to give a password and information sent to an already registered device. as far as this case is concern, we know that the fbi will be investigating, this after we learned that the syrian liberation army says they are claiming responsibility for the attack. reporting live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix

5. >> at this time, twitter is declining to comment on the matter but ap says they are working with twitter to investigate the hackers. some other bay area headlines now. the three boys accused of sexual assaulting and distributing photos of saratoga teen audrie pott are being electronically monitored and on house arrest. the 16-year-olds were released are juvenile hall on saturday and will have to petition to be allowed out of their parents' home. audrie pott hanged herself in september after the alleged sexual assault. joseph naso is going on try in marin county court today. the 78-year-old is accused of killing four women in northern california between 1977 and 1994. his trial has been postponed twice already because he decided to act as his own attorney. the murders happened in marin, contra costa, and yuba counties. and ac transit board of directors will meet today to consider another fare hike for its bus service. if the fare hike proposal

jump in front of an oncoming train. the police officer's heroic act was caught by a subway surveillance camera in colombia. after the incident the officer said it is his job to protect the public and he will continue to do so. a little thicker fog this morning so temperatures will be cooling off a few more degrees. as high pressure kind of gives way just a bit still going to turn out to be a nice day but we are going to see temperatures dropping off a bit. seeing low clouds sneaking into the north bay valleys as well so partly cloudy this morning. by the afternoon, becoming mostly sunny.

a marine layer cooling us down with a sea breeze. 40s now, this afternoon pleasant numbers but backing out of the 80s just a bit. high pressure still in control but this low kind of undercutting helping to bring with it that sea breeze. traveling out of sfo we are not expecting any weather delays for today. 63 degrees and looks like a pretty nice afternoon. we are going to see changes. denver cloudy at 54. patchy fog pulling back to the coastline throughout the day and surging onshore into the evening hours and overnight tonight into tomorrow. cooler weather tomorrow, as well. plan on highs in the 70s in the south bay, 50s at the coastline. mid- to upper 70s inland. then inside the bay we'll keep you cooler today about 60 in san francisco and 69 in daly city. next couple of days we'll bottom out with the temperatures and by friday warming up. nice weekend. next week maybe back into the 80s. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence.

'80s were a good time. [ laughter ] >> towards the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights were turned on shortly after 6:00. so now we are left with a backup from the foot of the maze. 15 or 20 minutes to get you on to the bay bridge this morning. typical stuff, no unusual incidents there. westbound 580 has been busy this morning. we had a couple of different problems at livermore, a stall, an accident. everything is gone now. but the drive time continues to creep up. 37 minutes now. the nimitz and the eastshore freeway. eastshore freeway doing great through berkeley. 24 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. in those westbound lanes so look at this. a pretty lodge line of red sensors coming out of tracy up over the pass to the livermore valley and improving towards the dublin interchange, towards 680. westbound 237 silicon valley ride this just started to back up in the last 10 minutes or so. we started to see the delays now leaving milpitas and heading out towards sunnyvale. so that's why that drive time

everyone out there. the company did meet expectations in the latest quarter. even though its profit fell 18% from a year earlier to $9.5 billion, first year-over-year profit dropped for apple in a decade. revenue though up 11% to $43.6 billion another record quarter for the company. no new product announcements coming out but it did listen to shareholders. it is going to reward them with $145 billion in cash. it's upping its dividend by 15% and expanding buy back to $60 billion. after dropping in after-hours trading after that report yesterday,apple up 1.25%. also helping the market this morning is boeing after it topped earnings expectations. hits shares are rising quite a bit. -- its shares are rising quite a bit. durable goods orders dropped 5% last month due to a big drop in

i'm sure he meant nothing wrong about it. a plaque was stolen commemorating the day barry bonds hit his 756th home run and take the record previously held by hank aaron. team security will review a week's worth of security video. the giants will replace the plaque. 6:50 now. a mormon wielding a samurai sword defended his neighbors in salt lake city. his son told him a woman who lived nearby was attacked by a man outside her home so that's when the man who teaches martial arts grabbed that samurai sword and chased him away. during the chase, the man apparently dropped his chapstick on the ground. >> i said, ha! i have your dna and your license plate. you are done. >> not messing with that guy. the suspect eventually turned himself in to the cops. he is charged with trespassing

attempted burglary and a violation of a stalking injunction. it was something bad that one store owner decided to put bang into his own favor. >> a surveillance camera captured an attempted break-in at a grocery store and that was used to make an ad like this. [ music ] >> meats and groceries, awashed winning new york style pastrami so good some people will do just about anything to get more. >> oh, boy. redding store owners are getting a lot of attention thanks to this ad. after an unsuccessful break-in at the store, the owners turned the video over to their marketing person. this is what they came up with. the owners say they are not mad at the burglar. >> we don't really care. i mean, he broke out window and you get all this free advertisement. why could we possibly be mad at him? >> the burglar was never caught and redding police say the case is now inactive and now they have a commercial.
